Pietrasanta

The little Athens of Versilia

The town of Pietrasanta is a gem in the province of Lucca, close to the sea and at the foot of the impressive Apuan Alps. It is the place where Michelangelo spent a long time selecting the finest marble for his works. Walking through Pietrasanta feels like stepping back in time, with artisan workshops that still work this precious marble today.

Ecco in dettaglio:

  • Meeting point: Pietrasanta train station, Piazza Matteotti, or another location more convenient for you

Places we will visit together: From Porta a Pisa, the only remaining one of the three original city gates, we will move to Piazza del Duomo, where the main buildings overlook the square, starting with the Cathedral of San Martino. We will visit the interior, characterized by remarkable works in marble and bronze, as well as a wooden crucifix dating back to the 14th century.

In the square, it will be possible to admire works by renowned sculptors featured in open-air temporary exhibitions.

The next stop will be the Column of Marzocco, symbolizing Florence’s rule over the city. Just a few steps from the column begins the path that leads us to the Rocca di Sala and the Big Bench, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view stretching from the town to the sea.

We will also see the Clock Tower, the Baptistery, the Rocca Arrighina, the monument to Pietro Leopoldo II, and other contemporary artworks scattered throughout the town, such as the famous Peace Frame at the beginning of Via Mazzini and Botero’s paintings in the Church of the Misericordia.

I look forward to welcoming you to Pietrasanta, the “Little Athens” of Versilia, where art and history come together to create unique moments!
